The City of Chestermere has given an update on the fire that happened at a duplex on West Lakeview Point just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.

According to the city, Chestermere Fire Services were assisted by fire crews from Rocky View County and Strathmore to put out the blaze.

"Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident," wrote the city in a news release. "Firefighters were also able to locate a cat and remove it safely from the home."

Due to the damage, the home is not habitable, and the occupants are now displaced. Although the blaze is under investigation, the city claimed that it is not considered suspicious in nature.

"Working smoke alarms can save lives," added the city. "Chestermere Fire Services would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the importance of working smoke detectors and to ensure they are replaced within the recommended timeframe."

Residents may notice fire crews going door-to-door as part of their "After the Emergency" program, which helps firefighters gather and share information. Residents can request a fire checklist and fire safety inspection of their home as fire crews are visiting.

Anyone looking to schedule a home safety inspection can reach out to the Chestermere Fire Department at 403-272-9878.
