Rob Carnie - It's the latest edition of Take 5 with Carnie and Carmichael, featuring Moose Jaw City Manager Maurice Carmichael. So much to talk about today, including the fact that the City of Moose Jaw has released its Infrastructure Renewal Program locations for cast iron watermain and the capital projects Paved Roadways Projects.
The locations have been announced; the City of Moose Jaw are going to pave approximately four kilometers of roadways at a number of locations around the city. City Manager, there's lots of work to do and we're going to get at it like right away here.
Maryse Carmichael - We are getting at it, really quickly. The good weather is here, so we're ready to have the crews out in the city and for our residents, a new location on our website to look at all those capital projects to see the updates and where we're at in all the work that we're doing. So it is really important to have a look at the website and see what is going on in your city.
Rob - I was happy to see that 13th Ave. NW is going to get some work this year from Montgomery to Grace, also stretches of 16th SW, 4th Ave. NW from Caribou to Ominica, stretches of Main Street north as well. Coteau St. W, 1st Ave. NW from Saskatchewan to McDonald, Thatcher, Dr. East from 9th NE to Hwy. 1 and 9th Ave. NW all the way from the railway tracks south of Normandy Drive all the way to Hwy. 1.
That's a lot of work. When I saw the City of Moose Jaw post this story, this update on Facebook, I saw somebody, maybe more than one person, but I did see one person wonder about 5th Ave. NW.
It is brutal going up the hill or down the hill and it is on your radar?
Maryse - It is a location that I actually went to and drove there a couple times this spring to really see what it's all about. It is on our radar for infrastructure renewal, so the cast iron, but not for this year, but in future years.
In the meantime, though, we are of course looking at it because of some of the issues that are ongoing on that street. We are looking at it for pothole repairs and some repairs this year. Not the full complete work on it this year, but some emergency repair, that's for sure.
Rob – Okay, yeah, well, why would we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get it repaved if it's going to get cast iron water main replaced, right?
Maryse - That's it, and that's really how we look at all the projects in the city. If we are going to go to a location in the next year or two, we really analyze what is absolutely required.
Rob - Cast iron water main replacement also announced on Coteau St. West from 8th Ave. SW all the way to 4th SW and stretches of 6th SW, 4th Southwest and Fairford St. as well, from Main Street to 4th Ave. NW.
So South Hill is going to be difficult getting around again this summer?
Maryse - Yes, again, but then some much-needed improvement. I think we see it on Coteau, it's really much better here from 9th Ave. SW to about 12th Ave. SW.
It really is a little bit of pain, but it's really worthwhile to improve the condition of the roads and the infrastructure underneath.
Rob - For sure, when does that cast iron watering work get underway?
Maryse - Right away, we have the process with the contractors is all ongoing. Engineering is overseeing all those projects, so as soon as the weather warms up a little bit more, we will be on the street.
Rob – Very good.
