Several hockey players from Central Alberta have earned spots at the 2025 Prospects Cup, a provincial showcase for top 2012-born male athletes. The tournament runs May 8–11 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.

Athletes selected for the Prospects Cup were identified through regional camps held earlier this month in Calgary, Edmonton, Olds, and Vegreville. Over 160 players will compete on eight regional teams—each with two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards—in a modified round-robin format.

From the West Central Tigers program, head coach Kelly McKinlay says several of his players made the cut.

“It’s pretty cool opportunity for them. They put a lot of work in this year and some of them came a long way,” said McKinlay. “So it’s cool to see them get rewarded with the chance to play.”

Players from Central Alberta competing in the Prospects Cup include:

  • Bryce Fuhrhop, forward, Wetaskiwin
  • Ryland Fuhrhop, forward, Wetaskiwin
  • Ian Kim, forward, Red Deer
  • Ethan Cuff, forward, Sylvan Lake
  • Easton Van Grinsven, forward, Red Deer
  • Drennan Blair, defenceman, Ponoka County
  • Maxim Phillips, goaltender, Sylvan Lake
  • Archer Martin, forward, Red Deer
  • Dalton Sherwick, forward, Red Deer
  • Cale Stephenson, forward, Bentley
  • Logan Ruttan, defenceman, Lacombe County
  • Thomas Wright, goaltender, Red Deer
  • Masen Medin, forward, Eckville

McKinlay said players were selected following a three-day regional camp featuring drills and scrimmages. “Hockey Alberta has people there watching and selecting along with the coaching group for each of the teams,” he said. “After the tryouts, they run a draft to pick the teams.”

The Prospects Cup is the final event of the Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase and introduces players to short-term competition and the Team Alberta development process. McKinlay said the tournament is a starting point for many players on the provincial path.

“It’s the beginning of the Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada development program,” he said. “Just a chance for the kids to play against the best in the province.”

Although he won’t be behind the bench this time, McKinlay said he plans to attend.

The 2025 Prospects Cup runs May 8–11 in Red Deer.
