Skatemore Girls held their first community social of the year on Friday, April 25.

The group partnered with local music store MaxSPL for the event, which featured snacks, video games and karaoke.

“I definitely want to make sure that I’m offering things for kids that don’t necessarily want to skate,” said Becca McDonald, founder of Skatemore Girls. “I also just really want to collaborate with Dan, because I think his space is so cool. Having a spot to get together is awesome.”

Daniel Wiewel, owner of MaxSPL, first began working with McDonald during an event at the Strathmore Ag Grounds.

“He donated a PA system and came in with his band,” she added.

Friday’s event also included a clothing exchange, allowing residents to swap some of their old clothes for something different.

“It was so fun. It was a cozy little spot, and a lot of the kids who did karaoke were shy at first, but then they came out of their shells and did it. I hope we do something like it again.”

Skatemore Girls meet Thursday evenings at the Strathmore Skatepark.
