A fun volunteer led project involving Unity was highlighted by the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan on Sunday, for the start of National Volunteer Week around the country, running April 27-May 3.

The archival group is leading a project titled "Saskatchewan Then & Now" where volunteers are given an archived photograph and then asked to recreate it with a modern-day version.

Unity was one of the first towns to come through on the list, being posted all week long on the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan Facebook page. The below picture of downtown Unity came out courtesy of Helena Long

Following up that photo was one of Denere Beach from 1960 and 2025. It was taken by another dedicated volunteer, Les Oystryk, who took the chance to learn more about the Saskatchewan location with a local while on the scene.

It's not hard to celebrate people like Long and Oystryk who go out of their way to help with nothing expected in return. That's why for National Volunteer Week, the Government of Saskatchewan partnered with Sask Sport, SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association to shoutout volunteers and everything they do out of the good of their heart.

"Volunteers are hard-working and humble individuals who come from diverse backgrounds, motivated by the simple desire to make our communities better," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. "In the sport, culture and recreation world, we know them as coaches, instructors, leaders, board members, event planners, teachers, officials, caretakers and so much more."

According to the government release Saskatchewan is home to more than 330,000 residents who volunteer in their communities. The release also shared that many of the volunteer opportunities are involved with Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation, which provides more than 1,200 organizations and communities with direct funding to reach approximately 12,000 beneficiary groups and a remarkable 600,000 participants across the province each year.

The theme for National Volunteer Week is 'Volunteers Make Waves - Together, we create ripples of change'. Read more from the government inside the full release from last Friday HERE.
