Industry professionals, town representatives, and municipal employees gathered Wednesday morning at the Rosetown Elk’s Hall as the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) hosted its latest stop on the 2025 Dig Safe Awareness Breakfast Tour.
The annual event, held in conjunction with April’s designation as Dig Safe Month in Saskatchewan, drew participants from across west central Saskatchewan — including representatives from private industry, as well as staff from the Town of Rosetown and the Town of Biggar.
Golden West Broadcasting’s Jenny Hagan, with Country 104 and 1330/1210, served as emcee for the breakfast event, delivering safety messaging on behalf of the SCGA’s Public Awareness and Education Committee.
“We appreciate everyone who took the time to be here today,” Hagan said in her opening remarks. “And we appreciate your companies for prioritizing safe digging.”
More than 30 sponsors are supporting this year’s province-wide safety initiative, which includes 23 breakfast stops throughout April. Each event is designed to provide excavators, contractors, farmers, and homeowners with tools and training to prevent damage to underground infrastructure and protect workers from injury or death.
Attendees received a collection of resources including Sask 1st Call brochures, WorkSafe Saskatchewan information, and decals from SaskPower to remind workers what to do if overhead or underground lines are struck. A featured video presentation highlighted topics such as directional drilling, sinkhole backfilling, and proper procedures when hitting underground infrastructure.
“We always say Sask 1st Call should be your first call, but it’s not your only call,” Hagan reminded the crowd. “Excavators must be aware of privately owned facilities and follow proper locate procedures.”
The SCGA's goal is to prevent costly utility damage, delays, environmental hazards, and injuries by promoting safe excavation practices. The video shown at the event will be made available later this month on the SCGA’s YouTube channel and website.
The Rosetown event is part of a larger tour that includes stops in Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Swift Current, Saskatoon, Weyburn, Carlyle, and several other communities across the province.
