On April 29, a fire was reported on the roof of the Quality Inn & Suites in Winkler.
The building, which is connected to Smitty’s and located on Main Street, has long been a recognizable part of the community and is owned and operated by Schinkel Properties of Steinbach.
As thick smoke poured from the structure, portions of Main Street and Highway 14 were shut down.
All hotel guests, restaurant guests, staff, and pets inside the building were immediately evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
In a release from Schinkel Properties, the Director of Business Development said the safety and well-being of their guests, team members, and community are their top priorities.
“We are grateful for the swift response from emergency services and will continue to cooperate fully with their efforts.”
On Tuesday evening, an excavator was brought in to tear down the most heavily damaged section of the hotel, the central part of the building which housed the pool area among other facilities.
Operations at the hotel will remain suspended pending a full investigation and confirmation that the premises are safe to reenter.
The Winkler & District Chamber of Commerce stated that they are deeply saddened by the fire that occurred.
"These establishments have been active members of the chamber and integral parts of our community, often going above and beyond to provide excellent hospitality, dining, and entertainment experiences.
"Our thoughts are with the owners, management, staff, and patrons affected by this unfortunate incident. We are grateful to the emergency responders for their swift action in managing the situation."
Schinkel Properties says that more information will be shared as it becomes available.
