Since 1936, the Pioneer Co-op has been a staple in the Southwest, supporting consumers and producers alike by buying and selling local products. With their 90th anniversary coming up next year, they have a lot to celebrate – starting with their communities!

Food and Liquor Division Manager, Curtis Nickel, said, “We exist because of our member-owners, and it’s only right we give back to them in any way we can.”

For the last six months, the Pioneer Co-op has revamped what used to be seniors’ day for ALL member-owners and customers. Discount Day is on the first Wednesday of every month, where shoppers can get 10% off almost everything in the Food Centers.

“If we have the opportunity to provide some additional savings once a month, it’s important for us to do that. While we always encourage our customers to become a member and earn equity on all of their Pioneer Co-op purchases, Discount Day is open to everyone, including non-members,” said Nickel.

Their dedication to their communities stays true to their local roots as well, sourcing as many local products as possible. Shoppers can easily find local products in their Pioneer Co-op, from local honey and jams to produce and meat products.

“All throughout the store, we have labelled Saskatchewan-made products and Canadian-made products. We also have a lot of support from our local producers within the Southwest, and we make sure to highlight them as well,” said Nickel.

Pioneer Co-op has Food Centers throughout the Southwest, ensuring that rural communities have reliable access to a variety of foods. Locations include Cabri, Kyle, Maple Creek, Shaunavon, and Swift Current in the Wheatland Mall and on the Southside.

Over the last couple of years, they’ve also started to expand their Wine, Spirits, and Beer locations.

“We wanted to ensure that people had the option to shop for Wine, Spirits, and Beer within their communities while having consistent prices in all locations,” said Nickel. “You can buy a product here in Swift Current and buy the same item for the same price in Consul, Herbert, whichever liquor store you go to.”

Like the Food Centers, Saskatchewan and Canadian-made items are highlighted in the Liquor Stores, too, “and we will continue to make those the forefront of our offerings,” so you can always find options that directly support your communities.
