Saskatchewan Government Insurance is putting the spotlight on intersection safety this May, highlighting the importance of driver attentiveness at some of the province’s busiest and most collision-prone locations.
According to SGI, 37 per cent of all vehicle collisions in Saskatchewan occur at intersections, making them a key area of concern for traffic enforcement and public education.
“Yielding the right of way and taking care at intersections is key to avoiding collisions,” said JP Cullen, chief operating officer of the Auto Fund. “To do that correctly, you need to give driving your full attention.”
Intersections are shared by vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians alike, creating a mix of road users that demands caution and awareness from drivers. SGI is reminding motorists to remain alert and avoid distractions, especially when navigating complex or high-traffic crossings.
SGI is also sharing tips to help drivers avoid collisions:
- Look both ways before entering any intersection.
- Come to a complete stop before crosswalks at stop signs and when turning right at a red light, where permitted.
- Wait for oncoming traffic to clear and check for pedestrians before turning left on a green light.
- Avoid running amber or red lights by anticipating traffic signal changes.
- Yield to the right at uncontrolled intersections and to traffic already in a roundabout.
- Watch for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Failing to obey traffic signals or yield when required can result in fines. Drivers who run stop signs or red lights, or who fail to yield to pedestrians at uncontrolled intersections, face tickets of $230.
Driving needs your full attention. Keep your eyes peeled and scan the road ahead to stay aware of your surroundings. This helps you react quickly, avoid collisions and create a safer driving environment for everyone.
