The community came out in droves yesterday for the second in a series of Food for All Events, sponsored by Rede-Made Noodles, in support of the vital work being done by the Rhineland and Area Foodbank in Altona.

Broadcasting live from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sun Valley Co-op food store in Altona, the event encouraged community members to drop off non-perishable food items and cash donations to help feed local families in need.

In total, the day generated $2,750 and many bags of non-perishable food items.

"It means we have money in the bank to keep buying groceries," said Angelika Stoesz, a committee member for the Rhineland and Area Foodbank. "We are so fortunate in our area. Our support is just phenomenal. The words goes and the cheques come in. It's quite amazing."

"It is such a great thing to see the community coming together for causes like this," added Vickie Friesen, Marketing Coordinator for Sun Valley Co-op. "We are fortunate to live in a very, very generous community with generous people that really show that they care by stepping up at times like this. We're happy to be a part of this community."

Similarly to other foodbanks across the region, the Rhineland and Area Foodbank has continued to see consistent growth in need, averaging nearly 70 hampers per week going out to households with one person up to seven or even nine people.

According to Jeff Peters, another foodbank board member, it's getting more difficult to stretch a Dollar.

"Families are obviously, feeling the pinch and, unfortunately, they've had to use the services of the foodbank. But we're there and we're happy to offer help for the families in need."

The Food for All campaign continues next week. On May 8th, the drive makes its final stop at Winkler Gardenland Co-op where donations will support the Winkler Food Cupboard.

You can help fight food insecurity right here in the Pembina Valley. Whether it’s a can of soup or a cash donation, every bit helps—and every bit stays local.
