A Model T driver near Strathmore will be heading to Drumheller later this month to compete in the Blast from the Past event.
Aaron Ornburn has been working on Model Ts for five years. He was inspired to join after watching a Model T in High River with his father.
"It took us two years to get our first car up and running. We already had all the parts. Dad had the motor and transmission already done; we just had to find the driveline for it. We just made it into a racer and started going."
The event will take place at the Dinosaur Downs Speedway on May 24 and 25. The race also features hot food and a stock car lineup.
Since getting into racing, Ornburn and his father originally ran a circuit around High River, Sundre, Drumheller, and Bruderheim. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of the Sundre and High River races.
Despite this, Ornburn said that they saw an increase in turnout during the pandemic due to the event being outdoors with space for fans to sit apart.
"It was good times. We had lots of crowds and lots of racers out, because a lot of the guys have other jobs that don't allow the full commitment on the weekend."
Ornburn is just one of many racers taking part in the event, with Saturday's races beginning at 3 p.m., and Sunday's beginning at 1 p.m.
"I can't give enough credit to the volunteers. They're what keeps us going."
The doors to the speedway will open one hour before the races begin.
