The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 Strathmore held a special event on Sunday, May 4.
Several legion members were in attendance for the memorial, which commemorated the Battle of the Atlantic, the largest battle of World War II.
"It started literally on the first day of the war, with the first victims occurring at 10 p.m. that day off the north-west coast of Ireland," said legion president Donovan Arnaud.
The battle ran from 1939 until the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. During the battle, around 4,400 Canadian seamen, mariners, and air force members lost their lives.
"It was just a bloodbath. A terrible, terrible battle. It lasted on and on through all seasons of the year, and the north Atlantic is not a fun place to be, particularly during the ambient months."
The battle peaked between 1940 and 1943 as Germany and Italy tried to cut off supply lines across the Atlantic Ocean.
To commemorate the battle, a bell was rung as Arnaud read off the names of ships that had sunk in the battle. Members also observed two minutes of silence and a bagpipe performance of Amazing Grace.
"It's a very important battle to remember by all the seafaring components of the Canadian forces."
Several wreaths were also placed by the legion's cenotaph.
