Steinbach Fire Department crews outside Robinson Supply

It's been a busy day for the Steinbach Fire Department.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Kelvin Toews, the chief of the department, says crews responded to a possible structure fire at Robinson Supply.

"When we arrived there was smoke coming out of one of the walls and out of the attic space in on of the corners of the building," he says.

Firefighters had to peel apart some interior and exterior walls to make sure the flames hadn't spread, he says, estimating about $5,000 to $10,000 in damage.

While on scene, Toews says crews were called to a grass fire on Keating Road, where they battled the blaze for about an hour.

"After that, we were called to a pile of brush on fire next to the Steinbach Soccer Park," he says, only returning to the department around 2:30 p.m.

No injuries have been reported for any of these incidents.

Toews urges Steinbach residents not to burn in current conditions.

"At this point, there's no burn ban. We're sort of relying on people to use common sense and not burn in these conditions. Grass fires aren't fun fires to fight," Toews says, and asks people to refrain from fires until there's been some rain and the wind dies down.
