The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed May 4 to 10 as Emergency Preparedness Week in the province.

This year’s theme, Be prepared, Know your risks, encourages residents to understand the risks in their region and learn how to protect themselves and their households.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is the perfect time to create an emergency plan and 72-hour emergency kit for your home and vehicle,” Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod said. “By taking these proactive steps, you will be prepared for any type of emergency and help to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.”

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is reminding residents to be ready for anything. Being prepared means considering a range of emergency scenarios and understanding what actions to take in each situation.

One important piece of an emergency plan is an emergency kit. Having a pre-built emergency kit for any situation can save time. A well-stocked kit should include:

  • Water: 4 litres per person, per day
  • Food: Non-perishable items, manual can opener, baby and pet food if needed
  • Light & Power: Flashlight, radio (battery-powered or crank), extra batteries, phone chargers, corded phone
  • Health & Safety: First aid kit (bandages, wipes, gloves, masks, etc.), 2-week supply of medications, specialized medical equipment if needed
  • Documents: Copies of IDs, insurance, passports, and your emergency plan with contact info
  • Cash: Enough for basic needs for a few weeks
  • Extras: Blanket, utility knife, fire extinguisher, lantern

It’s also important to check and replace expired items—like food, water, batteries and medications—at least once a year to keep your kit ready to use.

Throughout the week, the SPSA will share resources and planning templates on its Facebook page. Additional materials are available on the agency’s website.

SaskAlert test scheduled for May 7

A test of the province’s emergency alert system, SaskAlert, will take place Wednesday, May 7 at 1:55 p.m.

The alert will be broadcast on television, radio, compatible wireless devices and through the SaskAlert app.

Routine testing ensures the system is functioning properly and can deliver timely public safety messages in the event of an actual emergency.
