In a passionate address to Albertans earlier this week, Premier Danielle Smith outlined her vision for Alberta's future within Canada, addressing the province's frustrations with federal policies and the ongoing tensions between Alberta and Ottawa.
"Albertans have always been loyal, proud, and generous Canadians," Smith began, reflecting on the province's history of contributing to Canada's well-being, despite often being underserved by the federal government. She emphasized that Alberta has consistently supported Canada, from offering natural resources to welcoming millions of fellow Canadians searching for opportunity.
However, Smith expressed deep frustration with what she sees as a continuous "onslaught" of federal policies targeting Alberta's economy. She criticized the federal government's energy policies, including the cancellation of oil and gas projects, the imposition of carbon taxes, and restrictions on pipelines. Smith claimed these policies have driven away nearly half a trillion dollars in investment, costing Alberta jobs and opportunities.
"Our province has contributed hundreds of billions of dollars more to the federal treasury than we'll ever receive back in benefits," Smith said, citing Alberta's natural resource wealth as a key source of the nation's prosperity. "But we just want to be free — free to develop and export that incredible wealth of resources for the benefit of our families and future generations."
Smith's address also took aim at federal policies restricting Alberta's natural gas sector, agricultural industry, and energy production. She pointed to net-zero emissions mandates and other regulations that have, in her view, made Alberta a less attractive place for investment.
"We've fought back against Ottawa's attacks, and we always will," Smith said. "But the lost opportunities, jobs, and futures of so many Albertans are costly and demoralizing."
In light of these challenges, Smith revealed plans for a bold move aimed at securing a fairer deal for Alberta. She announced the formation of a special negotiating team that would work with the federal government to address Alberta's concerns, including securing guaranteed access to tidewater ports, ending federal interference in provincial resource development, and negotiating a fairer per capita transfer of federal funds.
Smith is also creating the Alberta Next panel, a group of experts tasked with exploring options to protect Alberta's sovereignty and economy from federal overreach. This panel will engage in town halls with Albertans to discuss possible paths forward, culminating in a 2026 provincial referendum to address the province's future. Smith emphasized that while the referendum would not include a question on separation from Canada, it would respect the democratic process should a citizen-led petition gather enough support.
Addressing the growing support for Alberta independence, Smith acknowledged the frustration of many Albertans who feel that Ottawa's policies have undermined their province's prosperity. She reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the rights of First Nations and other communities, emphasizing that any future referendum would uphold constitutional rights and treaties.
"While I do not support Alberta separating from Canada, I understand the frustration," Smith stated. "But I still believe there is a viable path for a strong, free, and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada — one where the federal government upholds provincial rights and empowers us to succeed."
