“The conventional medicine system offers a lot of amazing things. One of the things it doesn't offer is a lot of time for chronically sick patients.”
Shelley Wilson would know – she’s a nurse practitioner who’s also trained in functional medicine. During her time with the Cypress Health Region, she became interested in integrative and holistic medicine for a deeply personal reason.
“I was sick with chronic Lyme disease, and really felt that I had fallen through the cracks. I didn't want to see that happening to my patients. The system is busy – you go to the doctor's office and have maybe a seven-minute appointment. But when somebody has seven or eight chronic issues going on, and is on several different medications, it's difficult to fully manage their condition in seven minutes.”
That’s what led Wilson to pursue advanced training in Functional Medicine, opening Healing Hills Integrative Wellness in Eastend in July 2017; then rebranded, moved, and opened in Swift Current as Revelation Health Inc. in October 2024.
“My functional medicine training is an evidence-based medicine program,” reveals Wilson. “It marries conventional with natural, holistic, and integrative medicine – just bringing in the pieces that we don't really have the time to look at, or that we aren't really taught to look at in conventional medicine.”
Revelation Health is a private clinic that prioritizes health and promotes wellness, where Wilson listens well to truly understand each patients’ concerns, so she can develop individualized treatment plans that include nutrition recommendations, exercise, stress management, vitamins, minerals, herbals, IV nutritional therapy, pharmaceuticals, and potentially other investigations when appropriate.
“First, the patient completes a comprehensive intake. If they have a chronic and complex history, it's generally a four-to-six-hour appointment to get through everything,” Wilson explains. “When you spend that kind of time with the patient, they get invested in ways they maybe never had an opportunity to before.”
Wilson says many people have areas of their past medical history that haven’t been previously considered, and that impacts their health today; examining each of those areas can result in positive outcomes.
“I look at everything starting from when their mother was pregnant with them, what was her health like? I start there and go through their entire lifespan – what happened to them as a child, any traumas, illnesses? Antibiotic use? Did any of their health issues already start when they were a child? Emotional traumas, physical traumas, and incidents that happened in their health throughout their lifespan. I look at their family history, and if possible, at times genetics (private testing). And when required, I look at their environmental exposures, labs, ultrasounds, X-rays, and any other investigations they have had or that are necessary. I put it all together to try to better understand what's happening with that patient.”
At Revelation Health, Wilson has a broad range of patients, from children to adults, and from those who know they are chronically ill, to those who just aren’t feeling their best and can’t figure out why. However, Wilson says that people don't have to be chronically sick to book an appointment with her.
“If people want to come to me for prevention, I love that. I love to see people being proactive with their health – it truly is the greatest wealth.”
