A photographic and storytelling initiative aimed at preserving the legacy of small-town hotel bars is making a stop in west-central Saskatchewan this week.

The Beer Parlour Project, a labour of love by history enthusiasts Chris Doering and Rob Wierzbowski, will roll into the Coleville Hotel on Friday, May 9. Locals are invited to drop by any time after 3 p.m. to share memories, pose for portraits, or simply soak in the vintage vibes of the travelling cultural time capsule.

Doering, who handles interviews and research, said the goal is to document old-time taverns and the characters who keep their stories alive.

“These places are disappearing,” he said in an interview. “We’ve already visited over two dozen and we’re aiming for a hundred. Coleville will be stop number 25 or 26.”

The team uses a blend of old and new gear, including a vintage view camera and digital equipment, to capture portraits and moments from each stop. Interviews are transcribed and excerpts are posted to the project’s website, beerparlourproject.com.

While the project isn’t a broadcast or documentary in the traditional sense, Doering said it offers a rich, behind-the-scenes look at community hubs that once served as the heart of Prairie social life.

“Really, it’s about the people,” he said. “We hear incredible stories, we make new friends, and we get to witness some amazing history.”

Locals with stories connected to the Coleville Hotel are especially encouraged to attend. “Old-timers, regulars, anyone who remembers the place when beer was 50 cents and the jukebox still worked — we want to hear from you,” Doering said.

The project is expected to continue well into 2025, with hopes of compiling a book once all locations are visited.
