A wind warning is in effect for West Central Saskatchewan Thursday morning as strong westerly winds sweep across the region, with gusts nearing 90 km/h.
Environment Canada issued the alert at 9:43 a.m. CST, cautioning residents from Macklin to Biggar, and from the Alberta border east to Marengo, Kindersley, Rosetown, Eatonia, Eston and Elrose.
The powerful winds, associated with an approaching cold front, are expected to persist into early afternoon before easing as the front moves through.
“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” the agency warned. “Gusty winds can damage soft shelters, tents and awnings at outdoor events. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.”
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and take precautions while driving, especially on open highways where crosswinds may be hazardous.
To report severe weather, Environment Canada encourages the public to email SKstorm@ec.gc.ca, call 1-800-239-0484, or post on social media using the hashtag #SKStorm.
Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds that may pose a threat to public safety or property.
