Senior baseball season is nearly here, with teams in the Coteau Hills, Fertile Valley, and North Saskatchewan River Baseball Leagues gearing up for opening day.
The North Saskatchewan River Baseball League kicks off on Monday, with the Unity Cardinals hosting Lloydminster at 6:30 PM. With their diamond undergoing a massive transformation, the Cardinals will play their home games in Wilkie this season while Cardinal Diamond is under construction. Unity is the lone West Central representative in the league this year, as the Wilkie Brewers are not among the eight teams listed for the season.
The next group to fire up is the Coteau Hills Baseball League in the south, featuring eight teams this year in Beechy, Riverhurst, Kyle, Outlook, Eston, Elrose, Dinsmore, and the U18 Wartime Marlins. Opening night in the CHBL is set for Friday, May 23, with Wartime visiting Eston for a 6:30 PM start.
Finally, the Fertile Valley Baseball League gets underway on Sunday, May 25. The Kindersley Raiders open their season on the road against the Oyen Eagles in Alberta at 6 PM, while the Kindersley Cubs head to Rosetown to face the Angels, also at 6 PM. The FVBL action continues on Tuesday, May 27, with two all-Kindersley matchups: the Cubs take on the Raiders, while the Stallions face the Oldtimer Klippers.
The exhibition schedule is busy while teams wait for the regular season to begin. Unity was in Macklin for a game Wednesday night, and the Kindersley Cubs are taking on the U18 Royals at 7 PM Thursday on Berard Field, for the first of two exhibitions between those two teams.
