Steinbach Fire Department is urging residents to stay vigilant as fire risk increases due to dry conditions.

The City of Steinbach has elevated its Fire Danger Index to Level 2 as dry conditions and strong winds increase the risk of grass fires. The city announced the change in a news release early Thursday evening, stating that the restrictions are in effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

Under Level 2, no controlled burns are permitted, no burn permits will be issued, and all current permits are suspended. Fireworks are also prohibited within city limits. However, fires in enclosed recreational fire pits and the use of gas barbecues and gas fire tables are still allowed.

The City of Steinbach’s three-stage Fire Danger Index measures fire risk based on moisture levels and weather conditions. The current dry spell, combined with strong winds, has increased the risk of grass fires, prompting the city to impose the restrictions.

“These restrictions are in place to protect the lives and properties of our residents,” the city stated in the release, thanking residents for their cooperation.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by visiting the City of Steinbach’s website for updates on the Fire Danger Index Levels and the city’s Burning By-Law. Provincial burning restrictions can be found on the Manitoba Government’s website.
