It’s an exciting time at PJ’s Plantation.
This year marks the 25th season they’ve been in business as a garden centre. They like to say they’ve been “growing for you” because it’s true.
Owners Jody and Peter never thought their little business would become so big.
“We just wanted to move to the country and raise our young family. I’m a horticulturist and wanted to be in the greenhouse business," Jody explained. "I thought I’d start small with a few bedding plants."
What happened next shows how much the community embraced what PJ’s Plantation had to offer.
“The response was phenomenal,” she said. “We went from one greenhouse to two, then we added two more! As the demand went on, we kept adding! It was just my husband and I at the start, but as we grew, I needed staff. So I reached out to some local ladies. Some of the staff have been here for 15 to 20 years. I’ve also employed some kids from the neighbourhood for part-time work. The community is what really keeps us going.”
Now, PJ’s Plantation has grown to over 12,000 square feet, and the couple is thanking the community with a 25th Anniversary event this weekend.
“They’ve been so supportive through the years and helped us grow," Jody said.
"The 25th Anniversary Event is our way of celebrating with everyone! We’ll have specials like planters, hanging baskets and even deals on new arrivals since we have them coming in every week. We’re hoping a lot of our customers will come out and celebrate with us.”
Walking into PJ’s Plantation is like walking into an oasis for anyone looking to add to the beauty in their yard, or even make a stunning transformation.
They are best known for their beautiful bedding plants, annuals, hanging baskets, planters, trees and shrubs, perennials, and vegetable transplants - including their infamous giant tomatoes. What many may not know, is that PJ's is also a full retail garden centre, selling soil and potting soils, in addition to a few tools, fertilizer, and beautiful garden decor.
Jody and her team are always ready to help their customers, including those who may not have a green thumb.
“Our ready-made planters are easy and popular," she said. "You just plop them on your deck or patio if you want. We have lots of combinations to choose from. We also have these multi-liners which are little plants that are already mixed together in nice combinations. They are easy care and take away the guesswork of what plants go with other plants.”
Green thumb or not, PJ’s Plantation will always be “growing for you,” and they're happy to continue for another 25 years.
