The Seine River School Division (SRSD) is hoping to harvest a crop of new leaders with the launch of a new program.
Colin Campbell, superintendent of the SRSD says it's called "Illuminate," and is intended to give staff the opportunity to grow their leadership skills for the benefit of their schools.
"That doesn't necessarily turn into a vice principal or principal role, but it can," Campbell says. "The why of this is to build sustainable capacity in leadership, which is really important in our schools as we plan each year."
This comes at a time when the SRSD is focused on rebuilding its staffing levels following reductions due to financial challenges, which it's on the way out of.
As a part of the program, those in current leadership roles—like principals and vice principals—will share their experiences with participants.
"The hope is that as the years go by, we senior leaders have relationships built with educators in our school divisions that want to pursue formal leadership," he says.
Those currently in leadership roles will benefit from being more plugged into the day-to-day activities of classes and schools by interacting with participants, he says, which is also good for SRSD's schools.
"It's a real great opportunity to grow our school division in all areas," he says. "It's a really exciting point for us."
Campbell is expecting a cohort of around 12 to 15 people to join seven, three hour leadership sessions as a part of Illuminate—and is looking for French and English participants.
Upon completion of the program, staff will receive certification acknowledging their efforts, which could be included in their professional portfolio.
