A 52-year-old North Battleford man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting an RCMP officer during a traffic stop in the city.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, members of the North Battleford Crime Reduction Team conducted a traffic stop on May 7 around 7:30 p.m. after noticing a passenger not wearing a seatbelt.

Police say the driver, identified as Leon Night, got out of the vehicle and confronted officers. He complied when directed to return to the vehicle, but officers then spotted illicit cannabis and unstamped tobacco in plain view.

When officers told the man he was under arrest, RCMP say he resisted and assaulted one of the arresting officers. A physical struggle followed before Night was taken into custody.

The injured officer was treated in hospital and released. RCMP say the officer is continuing to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Night is charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on June 23.

The investigation remains ongoing and all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
