With sunny skies and daytime highs climbing above 30°C this week, Environment and Climate Change Canada is reminding farmers and others working outdoors to take precautions against the heat and UV exposure.

Temperatures are expected to reach 31°C on both Wednesday and Saturday in the Weyburn area, with a UV index of 7 or higher, considered “high” on the scale and posing a risk of skin damage with prolonged exposure.

Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said it’s important not to overlook the dangers that come with clear skies and rising temperatures.

“Definitely put on the sunscreen, certainly if you're prone to sunburns. Also, I guess for everybody, that's a good idea because UV radiation is very problematic for your skin,” Berg explained.

In addition to protecting the skin from UV rays, Berg emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and being aware of heat-related symptoms, especially during long hours in the field.

“Keep well hydrated, keep in a cool place if you can,” Berg advised. “If you have to be outside, keep in tune with your body, how you're feeling. If you're starting to feel a bit on the warm side, then seek some cool shelter.”

He added that it's especially important to check on those more vulnerable to heat, including young children, older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and those who are pregnant.
