The Eastman Raiders Football Club is asking the City of Steinbach to help pay for floodlights at the football field at A.D. Penner Park. The club made a presentation to city council this week, requesting $71,000 to cover approximately one-third of the total project cost.
Budget considerations
Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says council will consider the proposal during its upcoming budget planning meetings this summer. “They are obviously willing to commit significant resources of their own before coming to the city,” he said, noting that the Raiders intend to cover the remaining $141,000 through fundraising efforts and potential grants from other levels of government.
Cost breakdown and funding sources
Eastman Raiders president Gavin Don says they have secured fixed installation costs from a contractor with ties to the club. “The company that we approached is attached to the Raiders – a former player – and so they want to work with us and give us a good deal on this,” he said.
The total project cost is estimated at $212,000, which includes materials, labour, and a contingency fund. Don says the only cost variable is the installation of a new transformer and meter by Manitoba Hydro.
Community impact and program growth
The Raiders were founded in 1996 and have seen steady growth in participation, with about 150 players from ages 14 to 18 currently registered. The club has also expanded to include flag football clinics at local schools, which Don says has gained traction this off-season.
Addressing scheduling challenges
The proposed floodlights would consist of 56 lights and would address scheduling challenges as days get shorter in the fall, according to Matt Bergen, a Raiders representative. “Currently, practices are cut short due to reduced daylight hours,” Bergen said. “This would allow us to extend our practice hours, improve visibility and safety, and maintain our competitive edge.”
Next steps
Council will revisit the proposal during a planning session this summer. Zwaagstra says the city appreciates the Raiders' initiative and fundraising commitment but will need to consider the request alongside other budget priorities.
