Local country music artist Jordan Ostrom is coming out with new music.

Ostrom grew up on a farm outside Carseland and has been singing since she was young.

"My parents actually met on the rodeo circuit in the 80s. And so country music was just grandfathered into my existence", explained Ostrom.

She recently played at the Scotiabank Saddledome with a band called the Dungarees, who opened for Miranda Lambert.

Ostrom has since moved to Nashville, the home of country music, to widen her career.

Her stage name, Sykamore, originated from trees and natural settings.

"I decided if I was going to have a stage name, it would have to reflect the music in a lot of ways. So, I started thinking about how would I describe the music? What words would I use? And all the words were like, you know, rootsy, Evergreen, strong, natural in a way. As I was describing it, it sorts of appeared to me like a tree. And I thought, well, are there any cool tree names?"

Sykamore has songs like Better Half, Houseboat, and Pinto, which was nominated at the Country Music Alberta awards for Album of the Year in 2023.

Her newest song Country Kid was dedicated to her childhood.

"Country Kid came out in February. It was very much kind of a passion project, or maybe a personal song for me. I write a lot about my relationships, and I do take a lot from my own life, but something that I hadn't really written a lot about was my childhood and my upbringing, and sort of what the foundation that everything kind of sits on as far as my artistry. So, I was feeling pretty nostalgic and decided to write a song dedicated to my family."

Ostrom's plan for the future of Sykamore is looking bright.

She plans to release a song that she has been working on for 10 years this summer.
