The Rural Municipality of Ritchot is inviting local artists to submit expressions of interest for a new public art project aimed at fostering inclusion and belonging in community parks.

Project inspired by similar initiative in Minnesota

The initiative, called Signs of Belonging, was inspired by a similar program in Ramsey County, just outside of Minneapolis, according to Emma Dequier, program coordinator for the recreation department in the RM of Ritchot.

“We really liked the approach to using public art as a tool for inclusion,” Dequier said. “It really resonated with us, and we felt that it would be meaningful and impactful to bring to our community.”

Two-phase project to include pop-up event

The project will unfold in two phases. The first phase, currently underway, involves inviting artists to submit portfolios and expressions of interest. The selected artists will be tasked with creating art that conveys the feeling of being welcomed and included in park spaces.

“We’re encouraging applications from all artists, including from marginalized communities such as women, artists with disabilities, people of lower socioeconomic status, people of colour, 2SLGBTQ+ people and Indigenous people,” said Dequier.

The second phase will involve a pop-up event to unveil the artwork. The RM plans to host community events with interactive boards where residents can share what makes them feel included in park spaces. The number of installations is still being finalized, but Dequier said the goal is to have signs in every community within the RM.

How to participate

Art submissions are being accepted until May 23. Artists interested in participating can find more information on the RM of Ritchot’s website or contact Dequier directly at program@ritchot.com

“This project is about creating a sense of belonging for more people in our community,” Dequier said. “We hope to showcase local talent and give space to underrepresented voices.”

The goal is to have these signs posted in Ritchot parks this fall.
