Grade 10 students from across the Sun West School Division took part in the P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) program on Wednesday, May 14, in Kindersley.

The one-day awareness event brought together students from Kindersley Composite School, Eaton High School, Westcliffe Composite School and Eston Composite School. Held at Clearview Church in Kindersley, the program was presented in partnership with the Kindersley Fire Department, RCMP, EMS and Kindersley Funeral Home.

Designed for youth aged 15 and older, the P.A.R.T.Y. program highlights the serious and often life-altering consequences of impaired and risk-related driving. Students were shown a simulated collision involving a van and a car at the Elks Hall, where they observed emergency responders arrive on the scene and carry out a full-scale trauma response.

The demonstration included assessment of injuries, calming of victims, extraction from vehicles using specialized tools, and the arrest of an impaired driver. Students watched as the funeral home arrived to remove a deceased victim from the scene, emphasizing the finality of the worst-case scenario. Throughout the scenario, students were guided through each step of the emergency process to understand how responders manage such situations under pressure. RCMP also explained the aftermath of such events, including the often-overlooked reality that someone is responsible for cleaning up the scene once the emergency ends.

The program emphasized the emotional and psychological impact these incidents have on all involved, particularly in smaller communities where victims and responders may know one another personally. The experience reinforced the message that many of these situations are preventable through responsible decision-making.
