Environment Canada has issued Air Quality Warnings for all of southeastern Manitoba as a result of widespread smoke.
Wildfires continue to burn in the RM of Piney, just east of West Hawk Lake, and north of Lac du Bonnet, into Nopiming Provincial Park.
According to Environment Canada, “Smoke is causing or expecting to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. These conditions will occur over the next few days due to smoke plumes from Wildfires in Southern and Northern Manitoba.”
Residents are encouraged to limit their time outdoors including outdoor sports, activities and events.
In addition, the warning states, “People more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution, including people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and people who work outdoors, should reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
Environment Canada says mild and common symptoms include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and a mild cough.
More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.
As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, Air Quality Warnings are in effect everywhere east of Highway 75 and north of the US border.
