55+ Games Co-Chairs Audrey Harder and Doug Graham

From June 3 to 5, Steinbach will welcome hundreds of active older adults from across the province for the Manitoba 55+ Games – and organizers say there’s still room to get involved, whether you're a competitor, volunteer, or fan.

After more than a decade since last hosting, Steinbach is preparing to roll out the welcome mat for the Manitoba 55+ Games, with a full slate of events that range from high-energy competitions like pickleball to more casual contests like whist and predictive walking.

“This is about participation, not perfection,” says Doug Graham, co-chair of the local organizing committee along with Audrey Harder from the Pat Porter Active Living Centre. “We have over 20 events planned, and there's truly something for everyone aged 55 and up.”

One of the standout sports this year is pickleball, with over 300 players already registered, many of whom will be taking to the courts in the newly opened Southeast Event Centre.

“Pickleball has just exploded in popularity,” Graham notes. “We’re excited to see that level of interest, and we think it will bring a lot of energy to the Games.”

A Games for All Abilities

Not all events require athleticism; some are designed specifically to encourage participation from those new to competition. One such example is the predictive walk, a three-kilometre stroll where the winner is the person who most accurately predicts their finish time – without the help of a watch or smartphone.

“You could take 30 minutes or three hours – if you hit your predicted time without going over, you win,” explains Graham. “It’s really about fun, movement, and community.”

Another returning favourite is cornhole, now an official event after its success as a demonstration sport last year. Whether you’re new to tossing bean bags or a seasoned backyard pro, there’s a category for every skill level.

Opening Ceremony and Event Details

The Games officially kick off the evening of Monday, June 2, with an opening ceremony that will feature participants entering by Manitoba health region. Competitions run from Tuesday to Thursday and are spread across Steinbach at various venues.

The full schedule and registration information can be found on both the Pat Porter Active Living Centre website and the Active Aging in Manitoba site. Spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer on the athletes.

Volunteers Still Needed

Events of this size require significant behind-the-scenes help, and the organizing team is still seeking 100 to 125 volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

“Whether you have a morning to spare, or if you want to be involved every day, we’ll find a spot for you,” says Graham. “Even if you just want to help with the slow-pitch tournament or time the swimming races – we’d love to hear from you.”

Those with first aid training or an interest in event safety are especially encouraged to step forward. Volunteer sign-ups are available online through the Games’ websites.

A Chance to Showcase Steinbach

For the City of Steinbach, the Games are a unique opportunity to invite the rest of the province into the community.

“We want Manitoba to know what Steinbach is all about,” says Graham. “We’ve had great support from local businesses and the City itself. Hosting the Games is a way to shine a spotlight on our facilities, our volunteers, and our incredible community spirit.”

Audrey Harder says there are still more opportunities for local businesses to step in and demonstrate support for the Games.

“We’re looking for a way to showcase Steinbach, so if businesses want to provide a thousand flyers, coupons, or merch for the athletes’ swag bag, they can contact me at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre,” invites Harder.

“Whether you're participating, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, this is your chance to be part of something special,” adds Graham. To learn more, register, or donate, visit patporteralc.com/manitoba55plus.
