Work is soon set to start at the Bear Creek Dam and surrounding reservoir as several key initiatives unfold throughout 2025. These include a long-term feasibility study, opportunities for public input, geotechnical testing and upcoming structural upgrades – all aimed at planning responsibly for the future of this important community asset.
Public Engagement Opportunities
As part of a comprehensive feasibility study that began in December 2024, the City is evaluating long-term options for the dam, considering factors such as safety, environmental impact, regulatory compliance and potential future uses – including recreation, habitat restoration or decommissioning.
To gather resident input, guided site tours of the Bear Creek Dam are being hosted on June 19, 2025. These tours provide an opportunity to see the dam up close, learn about proposed options, ask questions and share feedback that will help shape the long-term vision for this key piece of infrastructure.
· Date: June 19, 2025
· Times: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. (tours start every 30 minutes)
· Location: Reservoir walking trails, south of 104 St & 107 Ave, Muskoseepi Park
For those unable to attend in person, an online survey is also available at engage.cityofgp.com/bearcreekdam and will remain open until June 22, 2025.
Geotechnical Testing Underway
As part of the study, residents may notice equipment activity in the Bear Creek Reservoir area on May 20 and 21. A contractor has been hired to conduct geotechnical testing, which involves collecting soil samples from multiple locations using an excavator. This work is expected to take one to two days and will help inform the technical aspects of the feasibility study.
While the impact to trail users will be minimal, equipment may briefly cross the trail network. Users are advised to follow posted signage and directions from workers.
Upcoming Armouring Upgrade
In addition to the feasibility study, the Bear Creek Dam is scheduled to undergo an armouring upgrade to strengthen its surface against erosion, overflow and structural wear. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2025.
“The Bear Creek Dam plays an important role in our community, and it’s essential we plan responsibly for its future,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “Through public engagement, technical studies and infrastructure upgrades, we’re ensuring that any decisions made reflect both the needs of our residents and the long-term sustainability of the site.”
