The City of Grande Prairie is advancing its 2025 capital construction season with roadwork planned in the Royal Oaks area and along 84 Avenue.
Road rehabilitation is set to begin as early as May 20 at the following locations:
- Royal Oaks Drive.
- 102A Street from Landing Drive to 85A Street.
- 102 Street from 104 Avenue to 116 Avenue.
Work on Royal Oaks Drive and 102A Street is scheduled to begin May 20, with construction on 102 Street to follow. The work is expected to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting. Transit Stop 422 in Royal Oaks is expected to be impacted during construction. A service update will be issued as details are finalized.
The scope of work includes asphalt milling, storm sewer repairs, overlay paving and line markings. Traffic will be reduced to single-lane alternating flow in active construction zones. Pedestrian access remains open.
84 Avenue Rehabilitation – Planned to Begin May 26
A multi-stage road rehabilitation project is planned to begin May 26 on 84 Avenue, with anticipated completion in early August.
The planned improvements include Full Depth Reclamation (FDR), spot replacements of concrete curb and gutter and landscaping. FDR involves pulverizing the existing pavement and mixing it with the underlying granular base. Cement and foamed asphalt are then added to the mixture, which is compacted to form a durable foundation. A new asphalt pavement layer is placed on top.
Stage One – Eastbound Lanes from West of Bridge to 108 Street
During Stage One, the two eastbound lanes will be closed, allowing for two-way traffic flow in the westbound lanes. A reduced speed limit of 30 km/h will be in effect and short-term closures may occur. Pedestrian access on the south side of 84 Avenue will remain open. Transit delays are expected during construction.
As work progresses, Stage Two will involve closing the westbound lanes and shifting two-way traffic to the eastbound lanes. A service announcement will be shared in advance of this transition.
“These projects are part of our ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Grande Prairie’s roadways,” said Director of Engineering & Transportation Services, Wade Nellis. “We are grateful to residents for their patience as we carry out these upgrades to strengthen our community’s infrastructure.”
Drivers are reminded to follow posted signage, allow extra travel time and stay alert around construction zones.
