The Omicron variant has prompted the province to expand the availability of third COVID vaccine doses for all Albertans 18 and over.
Health minister Jason Copping says vaccinations have proven to be a powerful weapon against COVID, but their effectiveness can decrease over time.
"People will be eligible when six months have passed from their second dose, and the rollout will move forward in stages," said Copping.
"The next stage will be Albertans 60 and older who will be eligible for third doses next Monday, Dec. 6.
Those 60 and over can start booking their appointments Thursday, Dec. 2.
He anticipates bookings for booster shots for all age groups will be open early next year depending on the number of appointments booked and the availability of vaccines.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw reports another two Omicron cases have been identified, one a recent traveller from South Africa and the Netherlands, and a household contact.
Both are isolating.
"This is not unexpected and is a testament to the excellent work of our public health lab and front-line public health teams," said Dr. Hinshaw.
"We will identify travel-related cases going forward and this is the purpose of our measures, to prevent transmission risk from importation and slow any spread."
About 84 per cent of Albertans have been fully vaccinated, that is they've gotten two doses of the vaccine or one dose of the Janssen vaccine.
Minister Copping says for the purposes of the Restrictions Exemption Program two doses will be considered fully vaccinated.
Over 33,000 children have received their first immunization since it was opened up to them and another 52,000 appointments have been booked.
