In the heart of Stonewall, a remarkable social enterprise called 'Something Beautiful Cafe and Card & Gift Shop' is changing how communities support individuals with disabilities. What began as a vision has grown into a vibrant cafe, gift shop, and community gathering space that celebrates inclusion.

Robin Varndell, a board member for five years, shares what drew her to the organization after retirement:

"I was so impressed with how Community Living Interlake built 'Something Beautiful' that it's become such a vibrant part of this community. I love that the work we're doing is so impactful for the members of our community who are living here."

Executive Director Tracy Fidler explains the organization's evolution since 1965 when parents first fought for their children's right to attend school. The social enterprise model developed as a natural extension of their mission:

"We hired a consultant to look into opening social enterprises. When Home Hardware moved out, we saw potential in this 10,000 square foot space. Our first social enterprise was the gift store, then we opened the cafe in 2019."

Darrell Dempster, who named 'Something Beautiful,' now works there three days a week. When asked about his favorite parts of the job, he enthusiastically responds:

"I do price taggings and greet customers. Helping others and doing different kind of things."

Fidler adds: "Darrell does such a great job welcoming people. He'll say 'Welcome to 'Something Beautiful,' can I help you with anything?'"

The space has become a true community hub, hosting everything from ukulele clubs to church groups. Varndell notes the community's warm response:

"People come here, enjoy the restaurant and gift shop. We have different events which gives community members a place to hang out just like everybody else. Stonewall has been completely embracing."

For those looking to visit, Varndell extends an invitation:

"Take a road trip to Stonewall. We have the quarry, Kingsman pool, amazing businesses on Main Street and great restaurants. We'd love to have you."

From its humble beginnings to its current status as a beloved community institution, 'Something Beautiful' lives up to its name - demonstrating how inclusive spaces benefit entire communities while providing meaningful opportunities for all.
