The rain in Bird River feels like an answer to the prayers of Southland Church, as the bible camp they run continues to be threatened by a wildfire in the area.

On Friday, the church posted on social media that the "fire has somewhat subsided. But we’re not fully out of the woods. It’s raining today—a true answer to so many prayers. But we still need even more rain."

In a statement, Southland says they have been closely monitoring Bird River Bible Camp using their security cameras which came back online on Thursday, and express gratitude for the efforts of firefighters there.

"They set up and continue to monitor protective measures—including sprinklers and hoses—to protect our buildings," the statement says.

The camera footage has also brought some suspense as they watch the fire unfold around the camp.

"We watched as the fire passed dangerously close—right near the camp’s perimeter—but, thanks be to God, because of the coordinated efforts of emergency personnel, it did not breach the site.  We are so grateful for how God has been answering our prayers," Southland Church says.

It continues to pray for all those impacted by the fire, first responders, and for the structures and other camps there.

The mayor of the Municipality of Alexander, Jack Brisco, has also posted a statement thanking all those that have helped battle the blaze.

He says more than 100 firefighters from across the province are on the ground there.

"At this point, I'm relieved to report that there have been no confirmed losses of structures. Water bombers and other aircraft will continue aerial suppression efforts today, including support from Ontario-based water bombers," he says, noting there are three major fires in the area.

Brisco says much needed rain is falling on the area, but as of Friday afternoon no impact has been noticed.

A mandatory evacuation remains in place for all properties east of Miller Road and north of Provincial Road 313, extending to Bird River, including Pinawa Bay and Sunset Bay.

The mayor reminds those that have been evacuated for at least 72 hours, may be eligible for support.
