Black Bear Rescue Manitoba says a bear cub rescued from the Lac du Bonnet fire zone has died from its injuries.

According to a post on the rescue's Facebook page, the seven-pound cub was found alone on Wendigo Road by a fire-related worker who brought it to safety. The cub had been separated from its mother and was possibly alone for two days in the fire zone before being found.

The cub suffered burns to its feet and nose and inhaled smoke. Despite receiving veterinary care and a treatment plan, the rescue says the cub was too weak to recover and died on Saturday, May 17.

Black Bear Rescue Manitoba thanked the worker, identified as Devon, who found the cub and Natural Resources staff who assisted. The rescue also thanked supporters who offered donations to help with the cub’s care. Donations can still be made at blackbearrescuemanitoba.com.

The Lac du Bonnet fire is one of several burning in southeastern Manitoba, where evacuations and road closures remain in place. Manitoba Wildfire Service continues to monitor the situation.
