The Winnipeg Jets’ record-setting season came to a sudden end Saturday night in Dallas, as Thomas Harley scored the series-winning goal in overtime to lift the Stars to a 2–1 victory in Game 6.
Scheifele scores in emotional game
The game came less than 12 hours after the Jets announced the unexpected death of Brad Scheifele, father of Jets star Mark Scheifele. Despite the tragedy, Scheifele chose to play, with head coach Scott Arniel saying it was a decision Mark made quickly, believing it’s what his father would have wanted.
Fittingly, it was Scheifele who opened the scoring.
Nikolaj Ehlers broke into the zone on a partial breakaway just over five minutes into the second period, forcing Jake Oettinger to make a pad save. With a delayed penalty coming to Dallas for high-sticking Gabe Vilardi, Kyle Connor followed up with a shot, and Scheifele buried the rebound at 5:28 to give Winnipeg a 1–0 lead. It was his fifth goal of the postseason.

Steel answers as both teams press
Dallas responded just past the halfway mark of the period. After Connor Hellebuyck stopped a shot from Thomas Harley with his blocker, the rebound landed directly in the slot. Sam Steel fired the puck bar-down for his first goal of the playoffs, tying the game 1–1 at 11:12.
Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey was injured nearly seven minutes later when Mikko Rantanen fell on Morrissey's left leg. The all-star defenceman left the ice and never returned. It was Morrissey's second serious injury of the playoffs.
The Jets outshot the Stars 12–8 in the second, but both teams pushed hard in the third, trading pressure in extended shifts.
Winnipeg nearly regained the lead when Mason Appleton had a gaping net on the short side midway through the third, but Oettinger made a diving save to rob him at 11:22.
Jets head into OT shorthanded
The first and only penalty of the game came with just 14.8 seconds left in regulation. Scheifele was called for tripping Steel, who was about to break free into the Jets’ zone.
Winnipeg, who won just 36.7 per cent of faceoffs on the night, began overtime shorthanded.
They nearly killed it off, but Harley ended the game at 1:33, blasting a shot from the slot past Hellebuyck to send Dallas to the second round and eliminate Winnipeg from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It marked the second overtime appearance for the Jets in this postseason. They had previously won Game 7 in overtime against the St. Louis Blues in Round 1.
Hellebuyck made 18 saves in the loss.
The Jets' season now comes to an end, while Dallas gets ready to face Edmonton in the Western Conference Final.
