Steinbach’s Public Works department is gearing up for several projects as spring gets underway. Public Works Manager Randy Reimer recently provided an update for the city’s Strategic Priorities Committee which includes members of City Council.

Spring maintenance underway

Reimer outlined several ongoing and upcoming initiatives, including sweeping streets, boulevards, sidewalks, and bike paths to remove winter sand.

Crews have been busy blading gravel roads to maintain them as the frost works its way out of the ground. The City’s weight restrictions are scheduled to be lifted at 7am on Tuesday, May 20th.

New equipment ordered

In terms of equipment, Reimer said a new line painter, an underbody plow sanding truck, and a pickup truck have been ordered as part of the department’s capital equipment plan for 2025.

Equipment repairs and maintenance

Maintenance work is also a priority, with crews currently performing an engine overhaul on a Cat loader and extending the life expectancy of truck boxes by sandblasting, repairing, and painting them.

Summer projects on the horizon

Reimer noted that planning is also underway for summer projects, including asphalt repairs, curb and sidewalk repairs, crack sealing, and line painting. Drainage maintenance, traffic services, and dust control are all being addressed.

Long-term planning

Additionally, the Public Works department is working with the city’s engineering team to review the 10-year capital plan and prepare a preliminary budget for 2026.

Transition in leadership

Before concluding his report, Reimer announced that Jerry Friesen will be taking over as Public Works Manager following Reimer’s retirement at the end of June. Friesen has been a reliable member of the Public Works team for over three decades.

“We have a great staff with diverse talents, and I feel confident that they will continue to deliver excellent services to our residents,” Reimer said. “Jerry has always been someone we could count on, and I know he’ll do a great job leading the team.”

Dwight Doerksen will step into Friesen’s former position of Lead Hand. Reimer said the transition is being planned carefully to ensure a seamless changeover for the department.
