The City of Steinbach has lifted its fire ban.
On May 8th, Steinbach elevated its Fire Danger Index to Level 2 due to dry conditions and strong winds. Under Level 2, no controlled burns are permitted, no burn permits are issued, and all current permits are suspended. Fireworks are also prohibited within city limits. However, fires in enclosed recreational fire pits and the use of gas barbecues and gas fire tables are still allowed.
Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says as of Tuesday morning, there is no longer a fire ban in effect in Steinbach. He notes the city is back to Level 1 on the Fire Danger Index. All fires must still comply with the City of Steinbach's burn bylaw.
"Weather is a huge factor," says Toews, explaining the reason behind the move. "It's cool, we've had some rain, so we've decided to lift the ban."
Toews says a big thank you to the residents of Steinbach for complying with the fire ban the last 12 days. He notes it went without incident.
"Just a reminder to everyone to also, if you are planning to have a fire, be fire smart, be fire safe," he adds.
