In the heart of Swift Current, the Swift Current Community Youth Initiative (SCCYI), known as “The Center,” stands as a vital support system for local youth. Executive Director Nathan Wiebe describes it as a “community for a lot of kids,” where staff are “inspired by the different stories we hear every day” and feel it’s their “job here in the heart of Swift Current to provide support for kids and to support them in different ways.”
For a rural community, The Center offers crucial engagement opportunities for youth who may not participate in traditional sports or clubs. Wiebe notes, “what is there for those kids that aren't necessarily playing sports or involved in different activities?” The Center provides accessible programs and resources, a “vital” space for building relationships and seeking help.
The Center offers a mentoring program providing “a positive influence” for young people. It also allows the community to get involved as positive role models. A wide range of activities keeps youth engaged: “art programs, we have tutoring, we have our after school drop-ins, we have our weekend drop-ins, we have our youth group, we have our Saturday and Friday night drop-ins. We have events and lots of different activities going on at all times.” These are facilitated by strong local partnerships.
The Center’s success hinges on its consistent presence and support. “It's about being a listening ear and hopefully building that trust along the way so that we can provide that vocal support,” Wiebe explains. Their popular meal program, sponsored by Innovation Credit Union, addresses a significant need for many families. “There's a lot of youth and families that utilize this program, that depend on this program.”
A key partner is W.W. Smith, who has sponsored several programs. Their latest collaboration has brought an exciting interactive program called Multi-Ball to The Center, a high-tech activity featuring “a screen on a wall with a projector and sensors” that encourages physical movement and engagement. Wiebe highlights its importance: “When you're talking about physical, social, emotional needs -- this is a big part of it. Having a partner like W.W. Smith and their generosity is vital to our survival. And not only that, it's vital for creating a healthier community.” He praises W.W. Smith’s “huge heart of generosity” and their leadership in community initiatives, recognizing their understanding of youth as “our future here in Swift Current.”
The impact of The Center is evident when young people share their pride in being part of it. To continue its vital work, The Center needs ongoing community support through volunteering, mentoring, sponsorship, or donations. Wiebe emphasizes, “One of our biggest needs is for people to get involved… We have a need for people on our Friday and Saturday nights. We have a need for mentors.” Those interested can find information on the website, SCCYI.ca -- about volunteering and donations. By supporting The Center, the community invests in a safe and enriching environment for its youth.
