The lockdown at Strathmore High School on Friday, May 23, was caused by a recent viral game.
Just before noon, police responded to reports of a suspect with a gun at the school. Due to the seriousness of the report, police initiated a lockdown at the school and surrounding buildings.
"RCMP arrived at the scene and quickly located the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident," wrote police.
The initial investigation revealed that there never was a threat, as the reported gun was actually a water pistol. Police said the suspect was engaging in the “Senior Assassin” game which has been circulating amongst graduating students in Canada.
The game involves students "assassinating" a given target by squirting them with a water pistol. The game has grown in popularity through social media apps like Snapchat and TikTok.
"Although an innocent game, RCMP is reminding those partaking, please be mindful that someone witnessing this or driving by could perceive a water gun to be a real firearm," added police.
The investigation into the incident continues.
