An increased number of break-ins at businesses and community facilities are under active investigation here in the southeast to determine whether or not they are connected.

In the meantime, the RCMP has provided some tips to help the public keep their buildings safe.

Consider installing an alarm system that covers both the interior and exterior of the building, ensuring it is always up-to-date and functional, and also consider installing video surveillance equipment.

If appropriate, installing a fence with a locking gate can also deter crimes of opportunity and convenience.

The RCMP also recommends posting clear signage indicating the business or facility has an active alarm system and video monitoring.

Outdoor lighting should be adequate and always in good working order.

Ensure doors and windows are securely locked during non-business hours, with deadlocks on doors and bars or film on windows to provide extra protection.

Park vehicles in well-lit areas when not in use and always lock vehicles and equipment, not leaving valuables, tools, or keys inside.

It's also important to always report crimes and suspicious activity to the police. When all crimes are reported, police officers gain a clearer understanding of the types and numbers of crimes occurring in their area. This information helps them plan future projects, initiatives, and education campaigns within the area and division.

Anyone with information about any crimes or notices suspicious activity in their community to report it by dialing 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or through www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
