The Saskatchewan RCMP have released a few more details regarding a collision between an impaired driver and a parked RCMP cruiser in Swift Current.
A Swift Current City RCMP officer was conducting a curfew check on Wednesday night at a residence when he watched a vintage vehicle crash into his parked cruiser. The officer noted that the driver, 33-year-old Tyler White, didn't have his running lights on and was driving erratically on Friesen Street.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The RCMP stated the cruiser is no longer driveable.
White was charged with one count of operation while impaired and one count of operation while over 80mg.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
Another RCMP cruiser was struck by an impaired driver on Monday in Tisdale.
Tisdale RCMP responded to a report of an erratic driver, finding the vehicle parked outside of a business. When the officer activated their emergency lights and pulled behind it, the vehicle reversed into the RCMP cruiser. An adult female was charged with impaired driving during this incident.
"i've been an RCMP officer for more than 48 years and this is a new one -- two impaired drivers striking police vehicles in a matter of days," said Supt. Grant St. Germaine, officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. "What’s not new is my frustration that some people just aren't getting the message: impaired driving is dangerous and can lead to tragic results. Until impaired driving is eradicated, we'll continue to use every opportunity we have to remind drivers to never get behind the wheel while impaired, whether that’s by alcohol, drug or fatigue."
