Strathmore High School’s Class of 2025 is celebrating graduation on Saturday, May 24.

Gwen Smith has been selected as valedictorian — a goal she has worked toward since Grade 7.

"I've been putting in a lot of work and a lot of effort into my academics," said Smith.

"I used to live in Hong Kong, and I was not the best at school because it's very academically oriented there, but then when I came to Canada, I was at the top of the class, so I just kind of wanted to stay there."

Smith moved to Canada and lived in Coalhurst and Lethbridge before settling in Strathmore. She said her biggest challenge was balancing multiple subjects while maintaining a personal life.

She spoke about her excitement upon hearing she was selected as valedictorian, and shared what she enjoyed most about attending Strathmore High.

"I really like how connected the teachers get to the students. I feel they get to know every student very well, so you develop a strong connection, and it helps you learn a lot better."

Smith will deliver her valedictory address through a prerecorded video.

"I talk about prioritizing your relationships and connections with people, and also taking opportunities as well, and there's a couple of jokes in there." added Smith.

Following graduation, Smith plans to take a year off as she decides what she would like to pursue.
