The largest street party in the Southeast, Summer in the City, is gearing up to once again fill downtown with music, food, culture, and community spirit — but it wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who help make it all happen.

Taking place June 13th ,14th + 15th this year, the popular festival transforms Main Street into a vibrant hub of activity, attracting thousands of people from across Southeast Manitoba. From the infectious rhythms of live music to the irresistible aroma of international cuisine and the laughter of families enjoying kids’ crafts and games, it’s a celebration of community in every sense. Behind the scenes, it’s the dedication of hundreds of volunteers that truly brings the festival to life.

Henry Unger, Volunteer Coordinator for Summer in the City, says planning is in full swing, and now is the time for community members to get involved.

“We're about three weeks out, and things are going really well,” Unger shares. “Right now we’re focused on recruiting volunteers before things kick off. There are about 200 volunteer positions this year — and we’re still looking to fill more than half.”

Volunteers can choose from a wide range of roles tailored to suit different interests, skills, and comfort levels. For those who enjoy being active, there are positions like parking lot attendants and facilities assistants. For others looking for something more interactive, opportunities abound with the Amazing Race event, at the kids’ craft zone, or behind the scenes in the volunteer lounge — a space where volunteers help support their fellow team members.

“There’s really something for everyone,” Unger says. “Whether you’re into music, sports, helping people, or just want to try something new, you’ll find a fit and you might even develop a new skill.”

Volunteers can participate in a wide range of roles including face painting

Volunteers play a crucial role across the festival grounds. Some help keep things running smoothly at concerts, others coordinate face painting and children’s activities, while many provide information and guidance to festivalgoers from the info booth. Even the volunteer lounge is a vital part of the event’s success — it’s where volunteers refuel, connect, and prepare for their shifts.

With shifts averaging just three hours, the commitment is light, but the impact is huge.

“Volunteering gives you a front-row seat to all the action,” reveals Unger. “You’ll meet new people, enjoy the atmosphere, and be part of something that brings joy to thousands.”

Volunteers receive a free Summer in the City T-shirt, access to the fully stocked volunteer lounge with snacks and meals, door prizes, and even food truck vouchers. But beyond the perks, the most lasting takeaway is the feeling of being part of something meaningful.

“Last year, people came back from volunteering at the Amazing Race and said, ‘This was way more fun than we thought!’” Unger recalls. “The energy, the people, the smiles — it really leaves an impression.”

An orientation session for all volunteers is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre. Signing up is simple — just visit summerinthecity.ca/get-involved.

As the city counts down to another unforgettable festival weekend, Unger has one final message for anyone considering getting involved:

“Volunteering is one of the best ways to experience the festival. You get to be right in the middle of the fun, meet great people, and help make Steinbach shine. If you’ve got a few hours to give, we’d love to have you on the team.”
