The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says nearly all of the province is now under extreme fire danger, including west-central Saskatchewan, as hot and dry conditions continue to grip the region with no substantial rainfall in sight until late next week.

Officials say the risk of both grassfires and forest fires remains high, with 20 wildfires currently burning across Saskatchewan. Half of those fires are classified as “Not Contained,” meaning they are expected to continue growing despite suppression efforts already underway.

We’re seeing an uptick in fire activity due to persistent dry conditions and a return of hot weather. Crews are responding to multiple incidents and the public should be aware that the situation remains dynamic and potentially dangerous.

In west-central Saskatchewan, fire crews have responded to several grassfires this week, fanned by gusty winds and parched fields. At least one evacuation incident has been reported in the province due to fire-related concerns, though details have not been released.

Of the fires being tracked, six are listed as Contained, three are under ongoing assessment, and one is actively being managed to protect specific values, such as communities, infrastructure, or natural resources.

Local municipalities have issued widespread fire bans, with more likely to be added in the coming days. The SPSA is urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning, discard cigarette butts responsibly, and take extra precautions with equipment that could ignite dry fuels.

Other emergency supports, including search and rescue operations, remain on standby as fire crews continue battling the growing number of wildfires.

The SPSA is asking the public to remain vigilant and informed as conditions evolve. “Please help reduce the risk of human-caused fires,” the agency said. “The smallest spark could lead to a major incident under these conditions.”
