The Government of Saskatchewan is marking National AccessAbility Week by recognizing the contributions of persons with disabilities and highlighting efforts to create more inclusive communities across the province.
In partnership with Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan, the province has proclaimed May 25 to 31 as National AccessAbility Week.
“National AccessAbility Week is an opportunity to celebrate the many ways persons with disabilities strengthen our province,” Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said in a news release. “Removing barriers for persons with disabilities benefits us all. Our government has a plan to move us forward in creating a more inclusive Saskatchewan, where everyone regardless of ability can fully participate in their communities.”
Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan, a provincial organization supporting people with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities, plays a key role in advancing inclusion and accessibility. Its work includes peer support, education, advocacy and helping individuals navigate services.
“Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan continues to celebrate National AccessAbility Week and acknowledges progress while realizing there are still barriers to overcome,” said Delynne Bortis, executive director of Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan Inc. “Ensuring that accessibility is a foundation rather than an accommodation will foster truly inclusive communities, opening the door for opportunity, dignity and full societal participation for everyone.”
In December 2024, the province released its first Accessibility Plan, aimed at improving access to government services. Over the next three years, the plan outlines steps to lead accessibility and inclusion efforts, increase awareness and support for a diverse public workforce, and enhance accessibility in government buildings, digital services and provincial parks.
The week also serves as a reminder that accessibility is an ongoing effort involving collaboration across government, community organizations and the public. Find more information at the Government of Saskatchewan website
