If you see smoke rising from Niverville, it may not be due to an emergency.

On May 27 at 8 a.m., the local fire department will be overseeing two controlled burns.

Cyrus Reimer, communications director with the town, says one will be on old farmyard land along Krahn Road South, and another on land in the Niverville Business Park.

"We just want to make sure that residents are aware that there will be some smoke from these controlled burns, but 911 is aware of it, the fire department is aware of it, and there is no concern to public safety because of this controlled burn," Reimer assures.

"The fire department will be the ones, to my understanding, starting the fire, controlling the fire, monitoring the fire and making sure it stays where it's supposed to be."

He acknowledges that fires are top of mind for many given the wildfires and bans that have been unfolding in recent weeks, but is confident in the ability of fire crews.

"They have been watching the weather, planning, and making sure that when they do these controlled burns, they're doing them in the safest manner," he says.

On May 20, the Town of Niverville reduced its fire risk to a level one, citing rain and cooler temperatures.
