Shoppers Drug Mart temporarily evacuated

Just before 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Steinbach Fire Department responded to a call from Shoppers Drug Mart in Steinbach. 

Fire Chief Kel Toews says there were reports of a strong smell of smoke or fire, prompting the evacuation of both staff and customers. 

“When we arrived, we did a search of the building and traced the source to be an electrical panel.” 

Although there was no active fire, the panel had overheated. An electrician was called in to address the issue. 

Once it was safe to do so, staff and shoppers were allowed back inside. 

No injuries were reported, and fire crews returned to the station by approximately 3:45 p.m.
