École Communautaire Réal-Bérard in St Pierre-Jolys is getting ready to throw a party on Thursday, and everyone is invited, whether you have a child in the school or not.

Réal-Bérard is one of 24 schools in the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine (DSFM), and during the 2024-25 school year, it has been celebrating 30 years of French language education in Manitoba.

For the village of St Pierre, that celebration is happening on Thursday, May 29th from 4 to 7 p.m. The school staff and volunteers are getting ready to host a community celebration in its courtyard to mark the big milestone.

Principal of the school, France Bouchard, says they are thrilled to host the event.

“We’re very excited about the community celebration happening this Thursday, and everyone in the area is invited. You don’t have to be a parent or student of the school, everyone is welcome.”

Bouchard calls the event a “Kermesse,” which is an old German word for a community street festival.

“It’s like a big party in the street, but instead of doing it on the street, we’re gonna do it in our backyard, in the courtyard behind the school.”

This celebration is part of a province-wide recognition of DSFM’s 30th anniversary. The school division, which was established in 1994, now includes 24 schools across Manitoba.

Bouchard notes, “We were one of the first schools when DSFM started. Now we have 24 schools, with one under construction in Sage Creek, and another one was just announced for Brandon.”

As part of Thursday's festivities, the school is also hosting a “Museum on Wheels”, a travelling display that tells the story of DSFM’s history.

“It’s set up like a museum with panels and photos,” Bouchard said. “Right now it’s in our hallways and library, but on Thursday, it will be outside for everyone to see.”

The festivities will also include food and a concert with music by Nic Messner’s folk band, Daniel Roy, Gilles Fournier, and Logan Picton, among others. There will also be plenty of fun for kids and families: bouncy castles, giant Jenga, and lawn games.

“It’s almost going to feel like a folk fest,” Bouchard said. “We’re asking people to bring lawn chairs and just come enjoy.”

Dinner is also covered. Thanks to community sponsors, pulled pork will be served free of charge. Food trucks will also be on-site, and Bouchard noted that no one is required to spend money.

“People can bring a donation if they want, but it’s not mandatory. Any extra money will help cover the cost of the event and go toward school needs, like field trips or a new play structure.”

When asked why this milestone matters, Bouchard didn’t hesitate.

“The DSFM school has played a big role in St. Pierre-Jolys and the surrounding region,” he said. “It’s not just about French education, it’s about cultural identity and pride. This school has helped maintain and strengthen the Francophone heritage in our area.”

He added, “We’re very pumped about this event. It’s going to be a beautiful evening. We’re expecting nice weather, maybe even a heat wave again. And we want to welcome everyone: from Grunthal, St. Malo, Otterburne, Arnaud, Steinbach, Mitchell, Kleefeld, everyone is welcome to come celebrate with us.”

Whether you’re there for the music, the food, the kids’ activities, or just to feel a part of something special, Thursday’s celebration promises to be one to remember as the school and community celebrate 30 years of French education in St Pierre.
